Water softening (Ion Exchange) in municipal drinking water treatment

As the first water utility in Denmark, TÅRNBYFORSYNING is providing softened drinking water using ion exchange technology. The softening unit is supplied by SILHORKO-EUROWATER A/S.
The presence of calcium (Ca) and/or magnesium (Mg) in water results in water being considered “hard.” Calcium and magnesium ions in water react with heat and metallic plumbing and will produce lime scale buildup. Further more, hard water reacts with chemical agents such as detergents to decrease the effectiveness of nearly any cleaning task. Hard water can be softened using an ion exchange softening process.
