The suburb NYE is a new smart livable city

Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark, has a new suburb called NYE (‘new’). The establishment of a new suburb gives the possibilities to rethink the resources and develop a smart livable city with a holistic approach to water resource management.

40% of the water consumption in NYE is covered by rainwater harvesting. EUROWATER has developed and established a water treatment plant to treat the rainwater and reuse it for toilet flushing and washing machines.

This water solution is the first of its kind in Denmark. In other words, an innovative solution that reduce the consumption of drinking water by using rainwater instead and hereby starts the foundation for an exciting and modern city.

The first citizens moved into NYE in August 2018 and in time the suburb will reach a population of 15.000 citizens.

The water treatment solution

The collected rain water is treated in a pressure filter using only the natural process of oxidation and filtration. The water is further treated by using ultrafiltration to produce water of high quality. The clean water is collected in a water storage tank. Before the water is supplied to the citizens it is UV disinfected.

A strong cooperation

The project is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark by the Environmental Technology Development and Demonstration Program (MUDP) and is implemented in cooperation with the following companies.
